This unusually deep vintage bell lampshade has been recovered, restored. The lampshade frame has an 18” top x 19” bottom and 25” deep.

Five of the seven layers of vintage trim has been restored and reapplied to the new lampshade cover. The gimp braid trim along the top and bottom is new.

The new custom fit silk cover and new liner was hand sewn to the lampshade frame. The trim was applied with an adhesive. Applying trim with an adhesive after fitting a new silk cover is a little unnerving. Even the the slightest spec of adhesive will show on a silk cover.

I believe this frame to be a Stiffel lampshade. The center of the spider wire was not stamped, but the globe fitting is indicative of Stiffel lamps.

I am currently restoring an old gold colored vintage bell lampshade with vegas gold charmeuse silk. The lampshade frame is in excellent condition. The shade sits on a globe lamp.

The lampshade has 5 layers of trim around the top including a scroll applique. The bottom of the shade has 4 layers of trim.

The liner is completely missing.

The vertical ribs are breaking through the cover fabric. The original cover has five (5) seams.

I was able to save the trim. I rinsed all the layers and let the trim air dry. I will use a braid in place of the bias fabric trim. The original cover was an old gold and the vintage scroll appliqué was old gold also. On the new cover, the trim will show up more prominently due to the varying colors of cover fabric.

Vintage Lampshade Trim

This lampshade is so very tall and contoured, I was not exactly sure how I was going to restore the shade. I originally thought that using a panel technique would be the easier way, but after much contemplation, I decided to sew the cover.

I was able to get the new sewn cover to contour to the frame with two seams. I have the shade frame recovered with the vegas gold charmeuse silk and relined, but I still have to reapply the trim. After my customer receives her shade, I will post the finished project.

This is a group of a variety of lampshades that needed liner replacements. Each shade was unique in design, shape and construction technique. Being able to restore lampshade liners, extends the life of historic fabric lampshade covers and shade designers. The five liner repairs were from two different customers.

Vintage Lampshade Liner Repairs

The mint green hexagon shade was originally done by “Diane Studios.” The center washer of the top spider wire was imprinted with “Diane Studios.” The silk shade had a tag that read “Hand Sewn for Beaze of Brooklyn By Diane.” I have restored several of Diane’s lampshade wires and they are very high quality frames. On this hexagon shade, I only had to replace the liner. Diane Studios lampshades are of the highest quality hand sewn construction and so meticulously done. Even the trim is hand sewn on. I replaced the liner and hand sewed the trim back on to maintain the quality of original construction. I searched for “Beaze of Brooklyn” and no results turned up. I can only guess this shade to be 80+ years old.

Diane Studios Lampshade Liner Repair

This pair of vintage pleated shades also needed the liners replaced. It was obvious they were historic shades. The washer of the top spider wire was imprinted with “Westwood.” The pleated covers were delicate fabric and the trim was applied with an adhesive. The bias trim was not salvageable. I was able to remove the trim, but had to slightly mend the shades. I used a bias trim with a braid overlay to trim the shades. The new trim finish blended well with the vintage pleated fabric shades.

The small boudoir cut corner is one of my favorites. I did not have any problems with the liner repair and was able to replace the original trim.

The medium size table lampshade liner repair was challenging. There was a bent rib wire. I contacted my customer to let her know I was not going to be able to get a clean finish, but she wanted me to do the best I could and proceed with the liner restore. The bent wire side of the shade was going to the back of the lamp. All in all, it came out better than I expected.

My customer was kind enough to give me historic information about this lampshade:

“My Mother was the original purchaser. The lamp was purchased in 1948 in a center city Philadelphia store called John Wanamakers. One of the finest stores of it’s kind. They had a huge organ in the center hall that played at the Holidays.

My Mother came to the United States as a war bride and appreciated the beauty of this Capodimonte lamp. The lamp was in her home in Philadelphia until 1958. When my Mother and Father moved to the suburbs where they had a home designed by my Mother custom built, it always had a place of honor in the living room.

My Mother is from Wels, Austria. The original cost of the lamp was seventy dollars. A good sum in 1948 I am sure.

At almost 91 this has belonged to my Mother almost as long as she has been in the United States so it still has the same place of honor in my living room.”

Fringed Vintage Victorian Lampshade Restored, PA

Antique Victorian lampshade restoration project. This vintage wire frame was in mint condition. Had I not taken the original cover off, I would have thought the wire was a new purchase and sent to me to be recovered. My customer said the shade has only been in three homes.

I believe this shade was from a manufacturer. The reason I say this, is because the cover was stapled onto the frame. Stapling is not a traditional custom made lampshade application. Also, the fabric was taunt like a drum. To fit a contoured frame with a fabric with no flexibility would be humanly impossible. From what I understand, these manufactured shades are sprayed with a solvent and run through a drying system that shrink wraps the fabric to the frame. I would say that maybe two of the 100’s of shades I have restored have been hand crafted.

The trim is applied after the cover is fitted. In this particular instance, I believe the fringe was an after thought. The reason I say this is because the top fringe was applied on top of the decorative trim around the top of the frame. Fringe is typically applied underneath decorative trim.

This victorian lampshade is now a custom hand crafted shade. I only had to wax the frame to enhance the longevity of the restored shade. I wrapped the top and bottom wires with a twill wrap to be able to sew the new silk cover and new liner to the frame. I used a rayon wrap for the center vertical scallop wire to protect the silk that will lay taunt on the wire.

The original trim cleaned up just beautifully. I rinsed the original trim to remove imbedded dust and let the trim air dry. After rinsing fringe, it has to be trimmed. The original aged trim keeps the originality of the shade and adds character to a newly restored lampshade. Not to mention, vintage trim is impossible to replace.

This Vintage Victorian Lampshade is my current restoration project. This beautiful frame has a slender chimney top and flares out to a scallop with a drop cuff. The ivory shade cover is trimmed with a brassy gold trim and fringe.

The liner appears to have been cut out. I am sure the shredding liner was removed to keep the shade safe to continue to use. The top spider wire dives eight (8) inches into the the lampshade frame. I like to see this on a chimney frame because it allows the bulb to not sit in the narrow part of the lampshade.

Antique Ormolu Lampshade Repair, Recover, Restore

Ormolu is a golden finish applied to decorative furniture, clocks and lighting. This original Ormolu lamp was modified and is now an electric lamp. The ornate finish on the lamp base is Ormolu.

The original shade was so delicate and fragile. The shade was cardboard between two pieces of fabric and stitching around the outside. The center cardboard had printed words, but could not make them out. It was clear this was a museum quality piece. I had not even seen the lamp yet!

Because of the shape of this shade, I knew it would be very difficult to assume the new shade piece would fit precisely into the lampshade frame. My customer brought the lamp to my shop so we could custom fit the framed shade and secure it in place.

Burgundy Lampshade Faded From Sunlight

These rose / mauve lampshades (2) were originally a deep burgundy but sunlight faded the fabric over time. My customer chose burgundy douppionni silk to restore the lampshades. These lampshades are hard backed styrene shades with burgundy douppionni silk applied to the styrene to recreate the original form. The deep burgundy douppionni fabric has a very rich matt finish.

Many of the shades I restore are one of a kind. Each customers’ decor is a different color and theme. The fabric, technique and shape are different. Often, I do not know what a custom project is going to look like until it is done.

I was surprised when I completed these shades and turned the light on. Not only is the lighting so very warm, but the shades have a dimensional look when lit!
