NE OHIO LAMPSHADE LINER REPAIR

Lampshade liners deteriorate over time due to normal lighting after a decade, two or three!   I appreciate the original shade covers as they are strong and aged to the lamp.

Square Bell Lampshade Liner Repair

People are often told that the entire shade needs recovered and relined if the liner is brittle, but it is just not so.  I have replaced liners on countless shades.  On most lampshades, the cover is applied first and the liner is applied last (on top of the cover from the inside) making it possible to remove the liner without damaging the cover.

This square bell lampshade liner needs replaced.  The cover is aged but not weak.

The lampshade liner fell during transportation.  The liners get so brittle, they rip when they are moved and turn to dust while I tear them down.

This picture is just to show the shape of the lampshade.

This old drum lampshade was so cracked that it had to be duck taped before tearing it down so it would not fall to  pieces.   I use the original material as a pattern for the new lamp shade and sometimes I have to go to extremes to keep the original from falling apart.

The deteriorating liners have been replaced with charmeuse silk.  The silk liners have been treated with fire retardant.   The fire retardant gave the silk  a different look, but still an elegant finish.

I was glad to know the candlelight bulbs are 40 watts.   The bulbs seemed brighter before the liners were replaced.  I suspect, due to the tattered fabric.  The light also has a dimmer switch.   All safety issues are intact.

Chandelier Candle Shades

These were very well made candle light lamp shades on a beautiful brass chandelier.  They are about 15 years old and the liners are deteriorating.  The original covers are in great condition and show no signs of weakness.  The wire frames are very sturdy and were constructed from a higher gage wire than I usually see in such a small frame.

I am only replacing the liners, using charmeuse silk since they are sitting up high and the liner is clearly visible.  I  used a fire retardant on the fabric which took away from the elegant finish, but the small shades are most definitely safe.  Safe always being a top priority.

When I picked up the shades, my customer put them on the chandelier just long enough for me to take pictures.  The clip wires were very hot in just a matter of minutes.  As I look at the picture, clearly the bulbs are a higher watt than what is needed for the small candle light shades.  I would suggest lower watt bulbs and using a dimmer switch for the chandelier.

I always use a fire retardant on any candlelight shade.  I understand SILK to be a natural fiber and tight weave.   With a candlelight shade, there is approximately 1 1/2 inches between the bulb and the liner.

Question:  Is fire retardant necessary on silk?

Pleated Lamp Shade Restored for Pineapple Ceramic Base

I was able to get a great picture of the pleated fabric shade on the original base.

People do not always know where the lamp is going to be placed when they purchase it, so I don’t get to know what the actual surroundings will be.  I would do accents different if I knew ahead of  time.  The good side of keeping everything neutral, is the lamp can be placed anywhere.

What do you think?

Small pleated restored shade

This restored small shade is for a pineapple ceramic lamp base.

It has a styrene (plastic) liner with an ivory fortuny pleated charmeuse cover.   “Fortuny” is a specific name for a pinched rolled pleat and “Charmeuse” is a term for a lustrous satin looking finish.  Fortuny charmeuse is an elegant pleated fabric finish.

It s a nice size small lamp shade (10″ x 14″ x 7.5″) that will hold a 60 watt bulb.

I am anxious to see the shade on the base!

I will post them together after Tuesday delivery.

Square Lampshade Recovered with Fortuny Charmeuse Pleat

This square pleated shade sits on a glass floor lamp with bulbs that are vertical inside the shade.  To keep the shade a clear distance from the bulbs, I needed to work outside the frame.

I wrapped the entire inside frame with grosgrain so the inside of the finished shade looked neat and clean.   I lined outside the frame with tricot.  It is a very thin liner but suitable for a pleated shade.

Candlelight Lampshades on an Old Floor Lamp.

FLOOR LAMP WITH SPORT CANDLELIGHT SHADES

From years ago, I had all these candlelight lampshades and did not know what to do with them.

Just for fun, I used socket reducers in the cluster lights around the globe top floor lamp and put my sport candlelight shades on them.

It is a fun light.  The clusters are soft lighting and if I need a bright light, I use the globe.

Square Pleated Shade Needing Recovered

This is the current lampshade project I am working on.  It is a square pleated shade that goes on a glass floor lamp.

This pleated shade cover is a fabric strip that is wrapped from the top of the shade frame to the bottom, inside and out, to look like a pleat.  It is actually a strip of fabric.

The floor lamp has two bulbs that go sideways.  There is not much room  between the shade and bulb, so I believe the wrap for the shade was appropriate.

I will wrap the wire frame with binding and work outside the frame to keep the shade and lamp orientation safe.

I will be using a fabric pleat called “Fortuny”.  The fabric is a poly charmeuse.   It will look very different from the structured uniform pleat that is on the original shade but will be a very elegant finish for the glass floor lamp.

I am anxious to work with the Fortuny Charmeuse.  It is a beautiful fabric pleated by “Tom and Son’s International Pleating” in New York.
