Vintage Scallop Bell Lampshade, Repaired, Recovered, Restored

This scallop bell lampshade was stored away for years. The lampshade originally had a swirl brocade cover.

Antique Bell Brocade Lampshade

The bell lampshade sits on a torch floor lamp. A torch floor lamp has a large center globe with three cluster light fittings around the globe.

The shade was manufactured. Staples were used to secure the fabric.

Splitting Lampshade Cover

The trim was similar to a chenille. I tried to clean the trim to be reused, but was not able to restore it. The vintage trim looked dull and dirty after it air dried.

The new lampshade cover is a beige Charmeuse Silk. The trim is new but maintained a vintage look.

“Hand Taylored in the Studio of Edward Alden Designs, Detroit” These two bell floor lampshades were seriously deteriorating. The covers and liners were brittle and torn. The top and bottom valances were still in tact. The lampshade wire frames were in great condition.

The vintage Edward Alden shades were hand sewn. I estimate the shades to be from the 1940’s due to the wrap on the wire. The top and bottom wires are wrapped typically with a twill, but these appeared to be more like gauze. The lampshade wire frames were in great condition.

The top and bottom valances were aged but still intact. I cleaned the valances, the best I could, without damaging them to be used on the new lampshade covers. It is time consuming to re-attach delicate vintage trims.

These rectangle lampshades sit on a chandelier. The shade fabric was splitting and the liners were damaged. The lampshade wires were solid and there was no rust.

I used a textured ivory fabric for the new cover. On chandelier lamps the liners are clearly exposed. I used an ivory silk to line the shades. Charmeuse silk liners are beautiful and a soft, warm accent, especially when you can see the liner clearly.

This lampshade sits on a cherub lamp. It is a hard backed lampshade. The top spider wire dives into the lampshade approximately 12 inches.

This large scalloped lampshade was damaged while being transported to a new location. The shade cover was getting weak from age and light exposure.

The original shade had all the wires wrapped and the cover and liner were on the outside of the lampshade wire. Inside the shade, you could see all the wrapped rib wires.

As I was removing the fabric,

you could see the lampshade wire was starting to rust.

I treated the wire before replacing the fabric. I did not wrap the wires. I lined the inside of the lampshade instead.

The cover is a slub finish fabric indicative of vintage shades.

This is a large scalloped top and bottom lampshade. The liner and cover were both damaged. Shade liners and covers deteriorate over time. Not only does the fabric deteriorate, but the covered wires can have rust damage even though no rust signs are obvious.

This shade had all wires wrapped. Both the cover and liner were applied to the outside of the frame. After I removed the fabric, you could see signs of rust on the vertical ribs. By looking at this shade, I would have never thought rust would have been an issue. Six of the eight wires had damage. It is minimal, but it has to be treated or will only get worse and show up on the newly restored shade.

These two lampshades had shredding liners. The trim was removed, the liners replaced and the original trim was re-attached. The bell shade is a Kichler shade. Kichler lampshades are quality frames and covers. The liners deteriorate from light exposure. The lampshade, with the fringe around the top, was not marked but was a very nice frame with an unusual finish.

While I was repairing the liner of this antique pleated lampshade, I could not figure out what kind of fitting held this lampshade on the lamp, or even what the lamp base looked like. I knew it was vintage. As promised, my customer sent me pictures of the lamp in its entirety. What an absolutely beautiful piece!

The lampshade is adjustable. The shade can slide up or down on the post making it adjustable. Not only is the shade adjustable but the flowers you see on the brass base are ceramic and attached to the base!

It gives me the greatest pleasure to see a finished restoration project. Especially a lamp that is a museum quality piece. I am so pleased that I was able to save the original cover. It keeps the lamp true to its original historic presence.

These two shades are currently being restored with lampshade liners. One is a Kichler lampshade. Kicher lampshades have high quality wire frames and cover fabric. The other lampshade is not marked. The frame is a nice frame with an unusual sophisticated finish. I like the time that was spent on detailing this lampshade. The cover is in mint condition. I am only replacing lampshade liners for both of these frames.

This is the Kichler. The finish is traditional and tailored. The liner has deteriorated and in the process of being replaced.

This antique pleated lampshade liner was damaged and needed replaced. The pleated lampshade cover was fragile and delicate, but a museum quality piece.

Because the pleated cover was so sheer, there was a liner underneath the pleated cover. Then there was the inner liner. Both liners were damaged, but the pleated cover was not damaged. My customer had said the lamp was hit by lightening.

I did not get to see the lamp, but the fitting that holds the shade onto the lamp is like nothing I have ever seen. The fitting could not be removed to work on the shade. There are screws that hold the fitting to the shade.

The shade was all hand sewn with the tiniest of stitches. I had no problem removing the trim or liner.

I knew I would not be able to replace the vintage pleated cover, so I chose to leave the two covers in tact and repair the damaged inner liner without removing the cover. I used scissors to trim away the damaged singed fabric and placed small strips of silk to cover the tiny holes. I sewed the small panels in place. You really couldn’t visually see the strips of fabric when the light was on because the outside cover was pleated so tightly.

I used charmeuse silk for the liner. I was able to replace the original trim and keep the shade true to its original museum quality.
