Burlap Lampshade for Antique Jug Lamp Base

You really don’t know how difficult it is to match a shade to a lamp base until you purchase a lamp base without a shade.  My customer purchased this vintage jug lamp base without a lampshade.    She could not find just the right shade that would accent the vintage jug lamp base.

Vintage Jug Lamp Base Without a Lampshade

She contacted me for a shade that would fit her lamp base.   We tried several different sizes and shapes.  The simple A-frame shade fit the lamp base the best.  We looked through fabric laminated samples and the burlap was the perfect fit.

VINTAGE BELL LAMPSHADE REPAIR, RESTORE, RECOVER

Vintage Bell Floor Lampshade wires rust when stored in a damp basement or garage.  But at least they were not thrown in the trash.  The lampshade wires can be treated and restored.

Recently I received a call from a potential customer requesting a price to restore an old bell lampshade.  I did not ask enough questions and gave the standard pricing for the recovering and relining a deteriorating bell lampshade.

Upon receiving the shipment, I opened the box to find only a wire.  No fabric.  No trim.  A seriously rusted lampshade wire.

I treated the wire to remove all the rust;  primed, painted and waxed the wire before starting on the project.

I used a different pattern with the same dimensions to recover the frame.  I thought it would be a perfect fit but something was different about the frames.  I believe the arched wires were angled differently.   I got through the project and restored the shade with an Ivory slubbed fabric.  I used a coordinating bias and beige soutache trim.

This small narrow drum lampshade yellowed over time.  The hard shell cover cracked and the trim was falling off.  The rose velvet trim was taking on a new color and the delicate metallic trim lost its glow.

I restored the shade with an Anna Marie Linen.  The hard shell material used to recover these type of shades is called fabric laminated styrene.  The Anna Marie Linen is a customer favorite.

I replaced the rose velvet trim and used a very delicate metallic gold trim to outline the velvet.

I try to restore as close as possible to the original design.

Restoration is a challenging service in any industry.  Lampshades are different sizes, shapes, fabrics and finishes.  These bell floor lamp shades were quite challenging and a learning experience.  My patience was challenged from the start all the way to the day of shipping.

The rose colored shades are the original shades.  They faded over time.  As I tore them down, the fabric color underneath the trim was red.

Antique Red Bell Lampshades

The original red shades only had one cover.  I know from experience that black or brown shades need to have two covers so they don’t appear transparent.   I was using a very dark burgundy charmeuse silk for the new cover.   The original fabric was dense and silk is a different texture but I still was not expecting to need more than one cover.  However, with only one cover, when the shades were lit, they looked like lingerie.  Since there are two of these shades, I covered one of them with a second cover and took a picture for customer approval.  One cover allows light to come through the shade but two covers make the shade like a black out shade (no light coming through the shade).

After covering the shades with two covers and an ivory silk liner, I used a matching braid trim along the top and bottom.  I trimmed the bottom with an additional old gold soutache to match the original gold trim that wraps around the valance of the shades.  These are the shades without the valance.  The charmeuse silk fabric is a beautiful rich finish,  but they are not done yet!

The Valance.  Charmeuse silk is a very soft fabric and does not crease well.  To make the valance similar to the original out of the silk, I backed the fabric with a very light weight fusible pellon.  Before applying the valance to the shades, I dyed the original valance trim to give it a more golden color, as it faded over time also.

Lampshade Vintage Valance Trim

A few months ago, I spent about a week on different fabrics and techniques to recreate a valance for myself,  but I have not done them for a customer.  So this was the first valance customer shade!  I tacked the valance on the first shade with the shade in the upright position and wrapped the trim around the valance.  I found it easier to turn the lampshade upside down and sew the valance.  When I got to the second shade, I started with the shade upside down and tacked and sewed the valance.

I had spent a lot of time on restoring these shades.  I was so happy with the finish and the the valances.

The evening I was packing the shades for shipping, I took finished shade pictures.  It wasn’t until I took that picture that I realized the gold trim around the valances was going in different directions!  I could not even believe it.  It was like a left and right shade.  I tried to ignore the obvious and continue to pack for shipping.   The blunder happened when I turned the second shade upside down to tack and sew the valance.

I just couldn’t let these gorgeous shades go without correcting the obvious.  I took a deep breathe, unwrapped one of the lampshades.  Took the valance off and reversed the direction of the gold trim.

A torch floor lamp offers a variety of lighting.  The center globe holds a mogul bulb  and will light up a room.  The three cluster fittings should be low watt bulbs (25 watts) and allow warm accent lighting.

Large fabric laminated drum lampshades were popular in the 50’s and 60’s.  These very large shades have deep recessed top spider wires.  The shades were decorated to coordinate with the lamp bases.  This particular shade was trimmed with a diamond cut gold leaf cardboard trim outlined with turquoise soutache.

The fabric laminated covers dry out over time and crack.  The top spider wire recessed approximately 12” deep into the shade.  One of the attachment wires was bowed.   Before reconstructing the new shade, we had the wire straightened.

The gold leaf diamond vintage trim that accented this drum shade was just slightly damaged.  Very patiently, I was able to remove the trim.  Before applying the original vintage trim to the new shade, I touched up the cracks with a gold leaf paint.

It is so fun to see the personalized finish and construction technique of vintage shades.     The ruffled trim finish is personal to the artist that created the shade.  I was glad to just have to clean it and not make it!   The original craftsmanship is awesome.

To my surprise, when I was removing the liner (after successfully removing the trim in tact),  had this foil type tape holding the liner firmly in tact.  First I have seen this material used to make a lampshade.

The bottom of the shade was stapled.  The general shade construction technique was manufactured.

The ruffled valance personalized this shade.  The person who made the shade valance, as well as the person who purchased this lampshade to accent their decor, had a theme in mind.

The trim was successfully restored.   I soaked the trim in cold water before using a mild detergent.  I towel dried the trim and let it air dry.   It was so wrinkled.  After ironing the ruffled trim, I used a fabric stiffener, similar to starching a doily.  The ruffled vintage trim has been restored.

The Creme Silk Charmeuse cover is in tact and ready to be lined.  Trimming the shade is the last step.

After my customer has her lampshade in hand, I will post the finished project.

Antique Floor Lamp Bell Shade Repair, Restore

Antique Red Floor Lampshades:  The valance is indicative of vintage shades.  The red fabric shades faded over time and they look like rose colored shades.  The cover fabric has deteriorating age spots.  The liners are shredding.   This is my current restoration project!

The shades fit on vintage torch floor lamps.  (the pictured floor lamps are not the actual floor lamps)  The antique torch floor lamps typically have 3 cluster bulb fittings around a glass enter globe. The many variations of light is a great feature of the old torch lamps.

The antique trim is also faded.  It looks beige but it actually was a golden color.  I used a lint roller on the trim before I rinsed it it cold water.  It cleaned up very well but the color is still very faded.  I will need to dye the trim to get the golden color back.

This is as far as I have gotten.  I removed the cover fabric and liner and this is the frame with the original wrapping on the wire.  The original bell lampshade frames have a protective powder coating and appear to have been kept in a living temperature controlled environment.   I cleaned the dust that accumulated over time and waxed the wires.  These lampshade frames are in mint condition.

The wrapping on the wires is also in great condition.  I also used a lint roller on the wrapping.  The wrapping on the wire is not your typical cotton twill.  I cannot say what the wrap is exactly, but it has a sheen to it.  Very unusual.

I am restoring the shades with a burgundy silk charmeuse fabric.  It is a very rich elegant fabric and will be  beautiful warm accent lighting.  As a courtesy to my customer, I will not show the finished project until the shades are delivered.
